Phoenix Mini-Split AC Installation
HVAC brands use the term mini-split to refer to both ductless air conditioners and heat pumps. The AC systems provide only cooling, while the heat pumps provide both cooling and heating. A mini-split AC is usually the appropriate choice when you’re adding on to an existing HVAC system. Homeowners will generally want a ductless heat pump if it will serve as their primary HVAC system.
Ductless mini-splits have very few installation requirements. That makes them a great choice for older homes that don’t already have ducts. A ductless install is going to be far less expensive than installing new ductwork in addition to an air conditioner. Wall mounting is the usual installation configuration. However, you can also install indoor air handlers on ceilings and floors depending on the needs of your unique home.
Mini-splits are also a great choice for disconnected living spaces. Examples include detached garages, converted garages and attics, and satellite buildings. In these scenarios, it is much more affordable to provide dedicated cooling than to connect them to the primary HVAC system.
These systems are also a popular choice as an add-on to central air systems. Bedrooms are a prime location. A mini-split lets you achieve your optimal sleep temperature while maintaining a more modest setting throughout the rest of the home. They’re also a great choice for sunrooms, home offices, and home theaters.
Standard mini-split systems will have one outdoor unit and at least one indoor unit. The indoor unit houses the evaporator coils and blower. The outdoor unit has the condenser coils and refrigerant. The exchange of heat energy occurs between the outside and indoor unit.
You may see some systems referred to as dual zone. That means that they come with two indoor units. But you’re not limited to just two. You can have as many as your home needs. While there is a practical limit to how many you can connect, this is a non-issue for the vast majority of homes.
Another notable aspect of a mini-split system is that you can expand the zoning later. If you have units in your living room and bedroom and later decide you want one in the office, that is a relatively easy upgrade.
Mini split systems have many advantages.
- Flexible HVAC zoning now and later
- Suitable for disconnected living spaces
- Easy installation
- Better energy efficiency
- Reduced carbon footprint
If you currently have a mini-split and are experiencing problems, replacement isn’t your only option. There are many mini split repair solutions available depending on the age of your system. Common correctable issues include leaking refrigerant, bad sensors, blocked drainage, and warm spots in the zone.
